First, more explicit instructions on how the puzzle works. (I did not intend to make this too difficult, I hope no one was overly frustrated by it. Five people did get the final answer in time to get extra prize draws, so I guess it wasn't completely unreasonable. I hope it was fun.) The pictures represent syllables which make up the words that answer the clues. Fill in the letters corresponding to each syllable in the grid - the letters in the grid will not spell out words on their own. Some of the pictures may be used more than once, and will not always stand for the same thing. For example, if the clue was "Triangular halloween treat," you could fill in the grid with A-C-A (meaning CAN-DYE-CORN, or candy corn). As you can see, some liberties were taken with pronunciation, but nothing too extreme. Once the grid is filled in, the circled letters in the grid will be rearranged to get the final answer. The pictures that were not used for anything else provide a clue for the final answer. OK, now for some easier clues, in case you just aren't getting some of the pop culture references, or whatever:

ACROSS

1. Creedence Clearwater Revival song speaking out against war, government and the upper class, now used laughably out of context in a commercial to make you think it's patriotic to buy a big American truck. Also the name of a George W. Bush biography.

4. Maryland's capital (not Baltimore!)

8. Lucky charm often hung over a door, or tossed at a stake in the back yard.

9. Palestinian leader Yasser

10. How you might sing the New Hampshire motto, if you don't know the words? (OK, this is just a hard one, and maybe a dumb one, but I can't think of any better clue. Sorry.)

11. Mythological creature attracted to maidens.

12. Tangy condiment for grilled burgers

DOWN

1. Superman's arctic retreat

2. What you do at the beach, when you are not doing anything.

3. Millionaire's daughter (easy enough as is)

5. Kelly or Ruben, maybe even Clay

6. Coastal Massachusetts between Boston and Plymouth

7. Sonny & Cher song, remade by UB40 with Chrissie Hynde
